SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team faced off against No. 4 Point Loma on Thursday in a doubleheader match-up. CUI had a combined 20 hits in just the two games compared to PLNU with 19.
Game 1: CUI 7, PLNU 12
Luke Glascoe got things started for the Golden Eagles as he hit a solo home run to right center to put one up in the frame for CUI.
Michael Dixon followed up the next inning with a three-run blast to left center to cut their deficit by one 4-5.
Jordan Bolden added in the third with an RBI single to bring home
Wyatt Madison and tie Point Loma at five all.
The Sea Lions scored five in the bottom of the third to take the lead back and each team kept the next four frames with a 0. Glascoe came up to the plate and hit another home run to be down by three. Point Loma answered back with scoring another two runs in the eighth.
Isaiah Walz and
Landry Spitler added two hits each while Madison had three singles throughout the game.
Josh Pugh started on the mound for CUI and went 2.2 innings with four strikeouts. After allowing seven runs to score,
Cameron Sims came in to pitch 1.1 innings.
Jason Rhodenbaugh would go on to throw 3.2 innings, his longest of the 2024 campaign, striking out two and allowing three hits.
Elliot Pigati came in and was effective with a strikeout to end the inning.
Game 2: CUI 2, PLNU 3
Jake Covey pitched a complete game and had six strikeouts while only allowing three runs in the six innings pitched.
Shane Wallace joined in on the day with a homer to right field and taking a 1-0 lead in the third until Point Loma retaliated with a home run also to tie the score at one each. Walz hit an RBI single to tie the game yet again at 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth the Sea Lions hit another solo home run to close out the game by a close 3-2 score.
CUI will finish the series against No. 4 Point Loma Friday Mar. 15 back at home at the Golden Eagles field with a start time of 2 p.m. followed by around 5:30 p.m.
