MALIBU, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team were looking for a rematch against No. 9 Pepperdine as they lost in a close five set battle earlier in the month. The Waves were able to top the Golden Eagles in four sets with scores 25-18, 25-20, and 25-21.
Gage Doble was unstoppable at the net as he led CUI with 10 kills while hitting an impressive .533 and served up an ace.
Ties Cornelissen was right behind with eight kills and
Christian Galoppo contributed with four.
Middle
Maxwell McCullough came up big up at the net with three blocks. Redshirt sophomore
Wolf Beeuwsaert came into the game for two sets and went 4-for-5 with an .800 hitting percentage.
Setter
Yotam Briger handed out 25 assists and led the Golden Eagles with four blocks had scooped up five digs.
Jacob Reilly was in the libero position and dug up six.
The Green and Gold jumped out with a lead in the first but the Waves came out with a run that took them in the lead and extended it finishing 25-18. In the second set a block from McCullough and Doble and kill from McCullough kept CUI within four. A couple errors from the Waves brought the Golden Eagles within three. Beeuwsaert came into the game and made an immediate impact putting down a kill in hopes of shifting the momentum but Pepperdine closed out the set 25-20.
In the third the score toggled between the two teams in the beginning. Doble served up an ace to take a 12-11 lead and took the one point lead to the media timeout with help from Beeuwsaert with a kill. Pepperdine broke away and went on a five point run and did not allow CUI back in to close out the match 25-21.
The Golden Eagles will be back in the CU Arena as they take on No. 1 Grand Canyon for a two game series starting Thursday Mar. 21 and Friday Mar. 22 with both slated start times at 7 p.m.
