IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team split Friday's doubleheader against Fresno Pacific in a non-conference match-up and improve to 10-10 on the season.
Game 1: CUI 4, FPU 2
Redshirt junior
Jake Covey gave CUI a quality start on the mound going five innings striking out four with only one hit and earning his third win of the season.
Richie Kingsborough,
Jordan Bolden,
Kaj James, and
Conor Meehan came out of the pen and each pitched one inning allowing two earned runs and six hits in four innings. Meehan picked up his sixth save of the season pitching in the ninth.
Michael Dixon got things going with a two RBI triple down right field line along with an RBI single from
Wyatt Madison.
Shane Wallace hit a homer to right field to extend their lead by four. The Golden Eagles were able to hang on to their lead until the end of the game since the second inning from the Wallace homer.
FPU was able to cut the lead by half with an RBI walk in the ninth with bases loaded but the next batter up flied out to center field to close out the inning.
Game 2: CUI 2, FPU 7
The roles were reversed in game two with the Sunbirds putting up four in the first frame taking an early lead over CUI. FPU came out to score another two runs in the fifth to extend their lead 6-0.
Tank Espalin tried to get the momentum to shift in the bottom of the fifth as he crushed an RBI triple to left center bringing
Landry Spitler home.
Isaiah Walz got in on the action and hit an RBI single to cut the lead 6-2.
Josh Pugh started on the mound for CUI and went four innings while striking out six and giving up four runs on six hits.
Jason Rhodenbaugh came in for an inning with
Matthew Williams closing the last two innings and striking out two batters.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the non-conference games against Fresno Pacific on Saturday Mar. 23 with 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. start times before going back to conference play against APU on Wednesday Mar. 27 in doubleheader fashion starting at 2 p.m.
