SEASIDE, Calif. – Seniors
Katlin Entrup and
Cortney Koelmans both had solid outings as No. 20 Concordia softball opened up a five-game stretch with two Friday games at the Otter Invitational.
Cal State Monterey Bay is hosting the three-day tourney. On Friday, the Golden Eagles faced No. 16 Northwest Nazarene before playing Montana State Billings. CUI will get a rematch with both squads on Saturday as well, before facing the host Otters on Sunday at 12 p.m. weather permitting.
Runs were hard to come by on Friday as the winning squad could only muster two runs in each of Concordia's games.
Game 1: #16 NNU 2, #20 CUI 1 (8 innings)
Cortney Koelmans brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the matinee against the Nighthawks. This was the third of four meetings this season with the same team they met and beat in last year's first round of the regional bracket.
The two teams were scoreless through seven innings, which forced Concordia to head to its ninth extra inning affair of the season.
Mary Baccay provided a lift with a clutch RBI single to plate the first run of the game. The rules for the Otter Invitational included putting a runner at second base to start all extra innings, so Baccy and the Golden Eagles capitalized on that opportunity.
Unfortunately, it was not the only run of the contest. NNU responded with two runs to walk it off in the bottom of the eighth. CUI fell to 4-5 in extra innings.
In fact, CUI ended Friday a remarkable 19-1 when playing seven innings or less. Five of CUI's six losses have come in extra innings this year – and all five of those are against nationally ranked teams in the NFCA DII Top 25.
Game 2: #20 CUI 2, MSU Billings 0
The Green and Gold responded in turn with a fantastic effort in their second game of the day.
Katlin Entrup struck out eight on her way to a complete game shutout. She only allowed three hits the entire afternoon.
This marked the eighth time this season that the former All-American has gone the distance for her team in the circle. Entrup leads CUI with over 100 innings pitched, 95 strikeouts and five shutouts. All this while sporting a dazzling 1.04 ERA.
Koelmans also ended Friday with an impressive 0.91 ERA. She is now 11-2 after the hard-luck loss against the Nighthawks.
On deck for this weekend are rematches with both squads from Friday. CUI plays NNU at 2 p.m. and then the Yellow Jackets in a night game slated to start at 7 p.m.
CUI remains 14-0 in PacWest Conference play with the next home doubleheader slated to start at 5 p.m. PT for this coming Tuesday, March 26 against Chaminade.
