Box Score 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The Concordia Golden Eagles were in fine form on Saturday as they snagged two victories in rematches against No. 16 Northwest Nazarene and then Montana State Billings..
In the battle of Top 20 teams, CUI shutout the Nighthawks in impressive fashion.
Then in the nightcap that started almost 90 minutes later due to some rain and inclement weather in the area, the Golden Eagles got into a slug fest with the Yellow Jackets.
The Golden Eagles improved to 25-6 overall.
Game 1: No. 20 CUI 8, No. 16 NNU 0
Shelby Pfeiler and
Missy Nemeth each hit a home run and the Golden Eagles cruised against the talented Nighthawks in the fourth meeting of the year between these two nationally ranked teams.
Pfeiler was the first Golden Eagle to go yard. She connected for her first long ball of this campaign.
Meanwhile, Nemeth finished with 4 RBI. She crushed a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give CUI some extra breathing room as the lead kept growing.
Seniors
Kaia Nisby and
Rylie Rohr had two hits apiece, along with leadoff hitter
Jessica Im and infielder
Mary Baccay.
The pitching trio of
Katlin Entrup,
Cortney Koelmans and
Kira Morris together limited the Nighthawks to only one single hit the entire game. Each pitcher went close to two innings, as all three were in a groove in the circle.
Game 2: No. 20 CUI 11, MSUB 9
CUI jumped ahead 6-0 after the opening inning in the other rematch.
Shelli Faulk and Nisby each contributed a RBI triple in that first inning to spark the offense against Montana State Billings.
With the game tied 8-8 suddenly,
Jessica Im ripped the go-ahead single to right center field in the top of the fifth to plate Nisby.
CUI then tacked on another run compliments of a sacrifice bunt by Baccay.
Madison Urrutia made her first start of the season in the nightcap. After her and
Bella Calvo combined to get the first,
Megan Casper came in and closed out the fifth.
Koelmans came on to finish out the final two innings to cement the 11-9 victory. Koelmans earned her second save of the year while Casper was the winning pitcher.
Kaia Nisby had a great day at the plate, going a combined 6-for-8 (.750) in the batter's box.
CUI will wrap up their appearance at the Otter Invitational this Sunday, March 24 at 12:00 p.m. against the host Otters from Cal State Monterey Bay.
