Game Recap: Baseball |

Covey Goes The Distance On The Mound Against APU

IRVINE, Calif. – After coming off a non-conference series against Fresno Pacific last week the CUI baseball team were looking forward to getting back in PacWest play against APU this week. The Golden Eagles split on the day with taking game one and then dropping the second. CUI has improved to 11-13 and 6-8 in PacWest play.

Game 1: CUI 4, APU 1

Jake Covey started on the mound and had an outstanding performance. The redshirt junior went the distance pitching his second complete striking out an impressive 16 batters. The Costa Mesa, Calif. native only gave up one earned run and five hits during his outing and collected his fourth win improving to 4-1.

In the bottom of the third CUI put up a run in the frame with a sac fly from shortstop Isaiah Walz to bring Tank Espalin home. The Cougars answered back tying the score 1-1 in the fourth. The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth where Haku Dudoit hit a sac fly and Luke Glascoe hit a double through the left side where Cameron Slessor and Michael Dixon came around to make it a 4-1 win.

Game 2: APU 10, CUI 0 (7 Innings)

Josh Pugh was the starting pitcher for the Golden Eagles and went two innings before Cameron Sims came in to relieve him. Sims went 3.2 innings while striking out three with three hits and three earned runs. Ryan O'Toole came in for the last 1.1 innings and had a career-high of four strikeouts.

APU took control of the second game of the day and scored in three different innings while not allowing CUI to bring a player around the bases. Wallace was the only Golden Eagle to collect a hit and he had two singles to try to get the momentum to shift.

The Golden Eagles will finish their series against APU Thursday Mar. 28 at the Golden Eagles field with a start time of 2 p.m. and around 5:30 p.m.
