IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI baseball team finished their series against Azusa Pacific on Thursday and tied the series at two a-piece and split for the second consecutive day. The Golden Eagles are 12-14 overall and 7-9 in PacWest play.
Game 1: CUI 6, APU 7
Riley O'Sullivan took the ball in game one and pitched six innings and went four scoreless frames and gave up seven hits and allowed three runs.
Jordan Bolden and
Richie Kingsborough came in to pitch the seventh inning while
Scott Wood and
Kaj James pitched the last two and gave up a combined four runs and only walked one batter.
Senior
Michael Dixon started things off for the Golden Eagles yet again as he doubled to left field to bring home
Isaiah Walz after getting on base with a walk.
Haku Dudoit contributed with an RBI single to jump out with a 2-0 lead in the first.
Shane Wallace put up a run in the second frame with a sac fly to center field score
Landry Spitler.
Azusa Pacific scored in the next three consecutive innings to take a 6-3 lead. The momentum started to shift for the Green and Gold in the eighth as Spitler got on base being hit by a pitch and
Owen Gott knocked a single through the left side.
Tank Espalin came up to the plate and loaded the bases after being walked. Wallace took advantage with the bases loaded and smacked a three run double to tie the game at six all. The Cougars came out in the ninth to score one and hold CUI until the end of the game.
Game 2: CUI 6, APU 4 (7 Innings)
Seven different Golden Eagles made contact with the ball in the second game where five of them collected an RBI.
Brett Finnel started on the bump and went 5.1 while tying his season high of six strikeouts and gave up four runs with seven hits.
Conor Meehan closed out the game going 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and earning his first win of the season.
The Cougars jumped out first taking a 2-0 lead in the first but Gott hit an RBI single to cut the deficit in half. Walz and Wallace both hit a sacrifice fly to take to take a 3-2 lead and Bolden added with an RBI fielder's choice that led to Glascoe scoring. APU came out in the fifth to tie the game with two RBI singles.
In the bottom of the sixth
David Baruch III came in to pinch hit and smashed a two-run homer to right field to take the lead back at 6-4. His first career home run with the Green and Gold came at a critical time for CUI to help earn the win and tie the series.
CUI will be back in action on Monday Apr. 1 as they take on Chaminade in PacWest play with start times at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. They will finish the series the following day Tuesday Apr. 2 with 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. start time.
