SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Despite having clock issues and a postponed game at the start of the Aztec Invite, the Concordia women's water polo team competed through their fourth overtime game of the season.
Originally, the Golden Eagles were scheduled to play two games, one against the Aztec Invitational host SDSU and the other against Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon. After postponing the first game, the Golden Eagles looked to take on the Titans as their single match of the day.Â
Concordia was neck and neck with Cal State Fullerton for the first two periods. The key scorers for Concordia were Tamsyn Evezard, Andie Perreira, and Abby Mammen at the start of the match. Graduate student Abby Mammen captured three goals overall for the Golden Eagles. Their combined goals tied the score 5-5 entering the half.Â
The Titans boosted their lead in the third period, where they captured three goals in comparison to Tessa Tavaglione's single goal for Concordia. The Golden Eagles only pushed harder to close the gap. Tess Henke was a force to reckon with when it came to the sprint. The freshman went 3-0 against CSFU and didn't stop there.
In the fourth period, two clutch goals from Allyson Corbett and Tamsyn Evezard tied the score for both sides and sent the match into overtime. CUI stopped the Titans from scoring in the fourth period, but CSFU slipped through and captured the first overtime goal.Â
Undeterred, Tess Henke scored a goal of her own to tie the score 9-9. It looked as though the teams would head into a second overtime, but CSFU scored the final goal with only a second remaining.Â
By the end of overtime, CSFU won the match 10-9.Â
The second day of the SDSU Aztec Invitational starts on March 9th at 8 a.m! The Green and the Gold will take on the familiar opponent CSUN and UC San Diego to wrap up the weekend.Â
