IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI baseball team is taking on Hawai'i Pacific in a four game series this weekend and split on the day with a doubleheader Friday. The Golden Eagles improve to 17-16 and 11-11 in PacWest.
Game 1: CUI 4, HPU 3
Michael Dixon proved why he is the
PacWest Player of the Week as he went 4-for-5 in the first game and put CUI on the board in the first with a solo home run to over the left field wall. Dixon also hit a walk off single to take a 4-3 victory over the Sharks.
Freshman
Isaiah Walz went 2-for-4 and had two RBI with a single and hit by pitch to tie the score at three all in bottom of the ninth.
Shane Wallace,
Luke Glascoe,
David Baruch III, and
Tank Espalin each collected a hit.
Jake Covey started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and had another solid performance going 7.2 innings scattering nine hits only allowing three runs and striking out eight. Covey is has moved up to fourth in conference with 63.
Richie Kingsborough came into the rest of the game going 1.1 innings and secured his first win of the season.
Game 2: CUI 4, HPU 8 (8 Innings)
Matthew Kaiser was on the rubber for the Green and Gold and went 5.1 innings putting up four K's.
Kaj James and
Conor Meehan came as the relievers and pitched a combined 2.2 innings allowing four hits and five runs.
HPU scored first in the second inning taking a 2-0 lead over the CUI.
Haku Dudoit scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half and put the Golden Eagles on the board. Wallace hit a three run double down right field line to bring home Espalin,
Michael Mira, and
Owen Gott and take the lead 4-2.
HPU answered back in the sixth to score another two and tie the game.
Makamae Du Pont came in to pinch hit in the seventh to try to get the offense going with a single but the Sharks closed out the inning to go into extras. The Sharks were able to load the bases and the next batter hit a grand slam to take the lead back 8-4 in the eighth and close out the game.
CUI will finish their series against Hawai'i Pacific Saturday Apr. 13 with new times of 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in hopes to fend off the rain.
