CUI Softball Locks Down PacWest Conference Title!

Golden Eagles Secure 5th Straight League Title With Top Seed in Upcoming PacWest Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - It is Shark Weekend at Concordia as both the softball and baseball teams opened up a key homestand against Hawai'i Pacific.

But more importantly, Friday was Clinch Day for the nationally-ranked CUI softball team, as the Golden Eagles locked down the PacWest regular season title

CUI beat the Sharks twice and coupled with Azusa Pacific losing once to Domincan, CUI claimed the outright conference title!

This is the fifth straight time the PacWest Softball crown has been claimed by CUI!  In fact, Concordia has technically finished in first place the last six straight seasons (Due to the pandemic-shortened season in 2021, the league does not officially honor a league winner due to pod play that year. CUI still won its SoCal Pod that year as did Hawaii Hilo and Dominican.)

CUI is now 21-1 in league play with only one loss to Chaminade.  APU is the closest team after that with eight conference losses, meaning the Cougars cannot catch up to CUI in the standings.

Game 1: #16 CUI 5, HPU 2

Senior pitcher Katlin Entrup improved to 13-6 with an efficient and workman-like effort in the circle.  HPU did not score until the final inning, and only managed five hits on the afternoon against the former All-American.

Shelby Pfeiler opened the scoring with a RBI single in the bottom of the second. Mary Baccay scored on the hit to make it 1-0 CUI.

Shortstop Rylie Rohr smacked a RBI double to the gap in left to double the lead to 2-0 in the third.

Kaia Nisby reached base twice and added a RBI single in the fourth. Missy Nemeth followed with a clutch two-run single to right to make it 5-0 Golden Eagles.

Game 2: #16 CUI 5, HPU 1

Missy Nemeth parked a solo home run over the right field fence to get the party going during a chilly second contest.

Senior pitcher Cortney Koelmans tossed six shutout innings and only allowed one hit. This coming just one week after Koelmans pitched the program's first perfect game in the NCAA DII era last Saturday!

Shelli Faulk reached base twice and came around to score both times.

Nisby knocked in another run in the fifth to make it 4-0 CUI.  Nemeth than brought her home with a RBI single to give herself 4 RBI on the day.

Rylie Atherton also made her debut and coerced the final three outs from the circle to close out the contest for the PacWest Champs!
