LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team played against the No. 2 seed Grand Canyon in the MPSF quarterfinals with a Wednesday matinee. The Golden Eagles put up a tough fight and did not let up easily but GCU was able to win in three sets with scores 25-19, 27-25, and 25-22.
In the first set the Golden Eagles took a 12-10 lead over the Lopes until they went on a seven point run to take the lead back from CUI and run with it until the end of the set. The second set was a battle as the score toggled back and forth between the two teams and went past the usual 25 points. A couple errors from GCU kept CUI in the game and extended the set until a kill and ace from the Lopes secured the second set.
The third set was no different as the Golden Eagles put it all on the court and jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The Lopes were closing in and took the lead as they reached the media timeout. After the timeout GCU was able to hold CUI and not allow them to go on a run and take the third set and match.
