IRVINE, Calif. - A hop and a skip down the road from Concordia University Irvine, the women's water polo team went head-to-head against the APU Cougars at the Woollett Aquatics Center. It was the first match of the week for CUI and what a grand start it was!
Concordia's lead scorer Abby Mammen hit back-to-back goals to capture the first lead of the game. APU struggled to get through Concordia's defense and was unable to score any goals in the first period. Freshman goalie Jaden Soto was responsible for these crucial saves, totaling 10 saves in the overall match. With five seconds remaining, Andie Perreira found her way through the defense and scored another goal to bump the lead 3-0 over the Cougars.
Despite a slow start, APU began to find its rhythm within the second period. The Cougars managed to tally three goals. Concordia sent a few good shots towards the cage to keep the game moving. One shot even led to a CUI goal after Abby Mammen recovered it off the post and tipped it back into the cage. Not too long after, Andie Perreira added another goal to her belt with an assist from Sofia Smith.
In the third, freshman Tessa Tavaglione sped through the water and captured the sprint for Concordia. With every change of possession, the defensive moves on both sides became more and more aggressive. Many man-down and penalty opportunities arose for the Golden Eagles. Mammen added another goal on a power-play and Tamsyn Evezard scored one of the two penalty shots she took. Despite the Golden Eagles efforts, the cougars gradually added goal after goal until the score was tied 7-7.
With a possible overtime weighing over them, both teams kicked into gear and battled for control. APU managed to get past CUI first, but Tessa Tavaglione cut her own path and scored a goal to retie it 8-8.
APU focused on furthering the distance between CUI and managed to tally on two more goals. Concordia battled through the Cougar's defense but couldn't bridge the two-point gap by game's end.
The final score of the match was CUI 8 – APU 10.
