FRESNO, Calif. – The CUI baseball team started their final road series against Fresno Pacific on Friday. The Golden Eagles walked away with two wins moving 19-18 overall and 13-13 in PacWest play.
Game 1: CUI 4, FPU 2
Freshman
Wyatt Madison had an impressive outing going 4-for-4 while hitting a triple and a double to bring in an RBI.
Michael Dixon continues to impress going 3-for-5 while knocking a double and RBI that brought home
Isaiah Walz to extend CUI lead 3-1.
Vito Fowler put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Madison and take a 4-1 lead in the sixth. The Sunbirds tried to get things going in the eighth and put another one in the frame but it just wasn't enough as CUI closed out the game 4-2.
Former NCAA DII pitcher of the week
Jake Covey started on the mound and was electric as he went 6.1 innings striking out seven.
Richie Kingsborough and
Josh Pugh came in to pitch a combined 1.1 allowing two hits and striking out three. Save leader for CUI
Conor Meehan came into the game in the ninth and struck out two allowing a FPU hit but collected his eighth save of the season.
Game 2: CUI 7, FPU 5 (9 Innings)
Matthew Kaiser was the starting pitcher in the second game and put up three scoreless innings before allowing five hits and two runs while striking out two. Four different pitchers came into the game from the bullpen including
Scott Wood,
Richie Kingsborough,
Conor Meehan, and
Kaj James who earned his fourth win of the season and is now 4-1 overall.
Madison continued the momentum for CUI as he hit an RBI single to right field in the fourth to put up a run in the fourth frame. The Sunbirds answered back scoring two in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over the Golden Eagles.
David Baruch III played first in the game and went 2-for-5 while contributing with an RBI single up the middle to bring home
Michael Mira and tie the score. FPU took a two run jump over CUI but catcher
Owen Gott hit a two-run RBI down the right field line to score
Haku Dudoit and
Luke Glascoe and tie the score yet again in the sixth.
Shane Wallace added to the inning scoring
Niko Santamaria and taking a 5-4 lead.
Fresno Pacific tied the score in the bottom of the sixth and went into extra innings past the usual seven inning game. A couple errors from FPU allowed CUI to get into scoring position with no outs and Glascoe took full advantage and hit a two-run RBI though the right side and jump out to a 7-5 lead. The Golden Eagles closed out the bottom of the ninth and took the win.
The Golden Eagles will finish their last road PacWest series at Fresno Pacific on Saturday Apr. 20 with 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. start times.
