IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team battled it out on Friday against another ranked No. 7 Stanford. The Golden Eagles took the Cardinal to five sets but just fell short with scores 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, and 13-15.
The middles were key contributors up at the net for CUI as
Clement Osahon Jr. was unstoppable on the offense going 15-for-20 while hitting an impressive .650. After topping a career-high of eight kills at BYU last week the junior nearly doubled it with 15 on the night.
Maxwell McCullough was also a force up at the net as he had nine kills and had a hitting percentage of .438. The San Marcos, Calif. native led the Green and Gold with two solo blocks and three block assists.
Outside hitter
Gage Doble went double digits with 15 kills marking an eighth time collecting double-digits while digging up six.
Makua Marumoto and
Christian Galoppo had 11 kills each with Galoppo having his second double-double of the night with kills and 10 digs.
Nathan Biteau came into the game and served up two aces along with
Chris Morikawa coming onto the court and collecting a block assist. Freshman setter
Yotam Briger handed out 48 assists while scooping up 15 digs.
Johnny Anselmo and
Jacob Reilly split some of the libero duties and had three and eight digs respectively.
After the match was tied at 2 sets each the teams were going to a fifth set. The last set was a nail biter as the score toggled between the two teams the entire time until the end as the Cardinal scored the last three points to take the match by just two points.
The Golden Eagles will finish their series against No. 7 Stanford Saturday Apr. 6 at 7 p.m. in the CU Arena. CUI will finish conference play with a series against No. 2 UCLA on Thursday Apr. 11 at 7 p.m. at home and honor their seniors before going on the road Saturday Apr. 13 in Los Angeles, Calif. at 7 p.m.
