CARSON, Calif. – Golf terms don't usually apply in softball, but on Tuesday, the Golden Eagles wish they could have gotten a mulligan.
Tuesday marked a makeup date between No. 16 Concordia and Cal State Dominguez Hills, and unfortunately for the Green and Gold it was not their best day on the diamond.
There were some bright spots for the Golden Eagles but the Toros were able to string together a number of hits in the first game of the day, and then rode that momentum to a second victory in the rematch.
Game 1: CSUDH 5, No. 16 CUI 1
Shelby Pfeiler blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning to get CUI on the board.
Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles could not string together a loud inning of offense.
Kaia Nisby provided two hits including a double in the seventh. But the Toros built an insurmountable 3-0 lead and hung on to win 5-1 behind a superb pitching effort by Ashley Wies.
Three days after
her historic performance tossing a perfect game, senior pitcher
Cortney Koelmans was
Named the PacWest Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Koelmans was excited to get back in the circle, but the Toros were able to tack on a couple runs against her on this afternoon.
Despite falling to 15-3 on the season, Koelmans still leads the entire PacWest conference in victories.
This was only the second time all season that CUI softball has lost a game that did not go to extra innings. The Golden Eagles were 27-1 entering Tuesday in games played in seven innings or less.
Game 2: CSUDH 10, No. 16 CUI 2
Jessica Im supplied a RBI single up the middle to give CUI a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the second game. Her clutch hit came moments after
Kendall Flatt had bunted
Megan Johnson over into scoring position after the senior worked a leadoff walk.
Katlin Entrup pitched two scoreless frames to open things, but the Toros got going in the third and fourth. A three-run double by CSUDH first baseman Kaylee Hull ultimately put the game out of reach.
Missy Nemeth led the offense with a pair of hits.
Mary Baccay added a RBI when she worked a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth.
