FULLERTON, Calif. - The Concordia men's water polo team carried the momentum from their first win and captured their second against Chapman on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles took on Chapman at 1 p.m. and the Titan Invite host, CSU Fullerton, at 5 p.m. By tournament's end, the Golden Eagles were officially 2-2 for the weekend.
Concordia managed to blaze past Chapman in the beginning, but the Panthers were determined. Harry Bentham and Konstantinos Koulouris led the Golden Eagles in goals with four and three, respectfully. However, a few clutch goals and exclusions on CUI bridged the gap between the two teams. The Panthers applied pressure whenever they could, especially when it came to the sprints. Concordia lost the first two sprints, but after the half, Kaliq Khan gave Concordia the advantage by winning the third and fourth.
By the fourth period, Concordia had the Panthers nipping at their heels. A strong shot by Harry Bentham put the Golden Eagles one point ahead followed by a crucial goal from Kaliq Khan to seal the win. Griffin Beth remained steadfast in the cage. The goalie had an impressive four saves and three steals to hold off Fullerton's offense. Concordia fought hard and protected their lead to make it 13-12.
The Fullerton Titans had home advantage for the final game. The crowd brought lots of energy right off the bat. The Titans scored three goals at the start, but Concordia's own Carlos Olat broke the streak. Luke Addington assisted the first goal. Konstantinos Koulouris followed suit with a penalty goal, making it 2-3. Defensively, Griffin Beth did the best he could against the Titans onslaught and had a crucial eight saves in the match. The rest of the game was tough for the Golden Eagles. The Titans widened the gap significantly, but Concordia attempted a comeback in the fourth. Luke Addington made a goal happen with an assist from Stan De Mey to get Concordia moving. Ultimately, the game ended with Fullerton's victory, CUI 9 – CSU F 14.
The Green and the Gold head into the Rare Air Challenge on Friday, Sept. 20. The men's team will face La Verne first in the three-day tournament at 8:30 am.
