U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Concordia men's water polo team flew over to Colorado for the Rare Air Challenge. The three-day tournament was hosted by Air Force Academy and included teams such as La Verne, Navy, Harvard, and Iona. The Golden Eagles split the first day, making their overall record 3-8.
Concordia won its first match of the day against La Verne 23-11. It stands as the highest-scoring match for the Golden Eagles thus far in their season.
Concordia took full advantage of the opportunity and outscored the Leopards in every period. Multiple members on CUI rose to the challenge and scored three or more goals. These star-studded athletes were Dawson Brummett, Jacob Stuart, Sam Diamond, Harry Bentham, and Oscar Garcia Blomback. Not to mention sophomore Kanoa Stoddard made his presence known and scored his first goal of the season along with three impressive assists.
With three goals against La Verne, Jacob Stuart moved into sole possession of second place on the career goals record list with 134. As of this moment, Jeff Runyan holds the school record with 145 career goals. Stuart was tied with Patrik Zsiros who had 131 goals in his career. Stuart also recently broke the recorded assists record and now stands to break another.
Against the No. 17 Navy midshipmen, the Golden Eagles went 7-18. The midshipmen captured their lead within the first minute of the match. Concordia's own Konstantinos Koulouris responded to this and pulled off three goals in the first period to make it 3-4. A few goals were sprinkled in throughout the match by Sam Diamond, Thomas Kelly, and Dawson Brummett. Despite Concordia's efforts, Navy remained persistent and relentless in their scoring. By the end, Navy claimed victory over the Golden Eagles.
The Green and the Gold faces Harvard at 9 am (PST) and Iona at 12 pm (PST) on Sunday morning. After splitting the first day, the Golden Eagles are on the hunt for their next win.
