IRVINE, Calif. - Looking to kick off the season on the right foot, men's soccer matched up against The Master's University Mustangs on Saturday's competition.
Starting off the match, both teams were getting a feel for each other's game. The Mustangs would make a run at CUI's goal, and then the Golden Eagles would return the favor with their own run. The Mustangs ultimately scored the first goal, but the Golden Eagles weren't far off. Just six minutes after the Mustangs scored their goal, CUI came right back at them.
Dylan Graham bullied his way into the defense and capitalized on a rebound off the post to score for CUI. The assist came from
Miguel Arroyo, making it a 1-1 game going into the half.
Returning from the half, the intensity of both teams was turned up a notch, and some extremely physical soccer was played. The competition had a total of six yellow cards, and a couple of players had a stern talk with the main referee. Despite the intense match up, the Golden Eagles took advantage of the moment and drew a penalty in the goalie box late in the second half.
The starting forward,
Miguel Arroyo, took the shot and scored to put the Golden Eagles over the Mustangs with a final score of 2-1. This marks the first win in the record books for new head coach
Erik Kirsch in his Golden Eagles debut.
