Golden Eagles Rise To The Occasion Over CSUDH

CUI Goes 3-1 In First Four Games On Opening Weekend

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team closed out the Golden Eagle Classic in exciting fashion as they came back to win in five sets after being down by two. The final scores of the sets were 18-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, and 15-9.

Everyone played a huge roll in this thriller of a game but the duo of Caitlin Jarrell and Delaney Gregg were unstoppable out of the middle. Jarrell finished the match with 12 kills while hitting .400 and Gregg posted 14 kills with a .500 hitting percentage. Both contributed defensively with two solo blocks each.

Kennedy Farley led the Golden Eagles with a career-high 21 kills and scooped up 14 digs. Freshman Jadyn Orava reached her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs while Kayden Croy added six kills and two blocks including one solo.

The back row was a force as libero Delaney Risse put up a career-high 27 digs. Makena Thomas and Celia Dowell came into the game and made an immediate impact with 12 and 11 digs. Kawehi Chang also dished out an impressive 57 assists which marks a career-high and tops the CUI record book with assists in a five set match.

Cal State Dominguez Hills won the first two sets but Concordia took charge in the third set and only allowed the Toros to earn more than a side out point twice. In the fourth set the Toros were trying to come back but the Golden Eagle offense could not be stopped as they closed out the set by a close 25-22 forcing a fifth set.

CUI continued their momentum in the fifth set and took control to secure the comeback win. Tough serving from Croy, a couple Toros errors, and kills from Orava helped extend their lead 11-4. The Toros went on a run near the end but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles secured their first five set victory.

The Golden Eagles will be on the road up north as they compete in the Route 92 Classic hosted by San Francisco State. CUI will start play Friday Sept. 13 against Lubbock Christian and San Francisco State with 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. start times.
