IRVINE, Calif. – Fueled by a great start and motivated to bounce back after a narrow loss to Vanguard on Thursday, the Concordia men's basketball team captured a 74-65 win on Saturday against Westmont.
After building a double-digit lead in the first half, CUI squashed any Westmont hopes of a comeback with hustle plays down the stretch.
Jayce Catchings was a beast on the boards, consistently grabbing rebounds against multiple Warriors. He finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Golden Eagles outrebounded Westmont 43-30 and had four players in double figures.
Joseph Locandro was big off the bench with 15 points, four blocks and four rebounds. He shot 7-for-11 and was able to carry CUI offensively for lengthy sequences.
Meanwhile,
Connor Gleason added a dozen points and three steals while
Jaden Henderson also had 12 points and a team-high four assists.
A key match up was Gleason as a feature defender against PacWest leading scorer Adrian McIntyre.
CUI held McIntyre to only two points in the entire first half and he only shot 24 percent from the floor (8-for-25) before finishing with 22 points. He was also just 1-for-9 from three-point land, which was part of Concordia's game plan.
"McIntyre is really tough to guard and we did a good job just trying to make things hard for him," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "Jayce was tremendous rebounding the ball for us and our entire group competed extremely hard. That's a really good win for our guys."
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a home date with Menlo College this Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. The men's game begins after the women's contest as part of a PacWest conference doubleheader.
