IRVINE, Calif. - The Westmont University Warriors were in town to face off against the CUI Golden Eagles in Saturday's competition.
As the refs threw up the jump ball,
Cadence Tarrant won the opening tip, and the game was off. Starting out the game, both teams were extremely aggressive with the basket, leading to lots of free throws.
Izzy Navarro set the tone by scoring nine points quickly in the first quarter. She had racked up 17 by halftime on her way to another impressive output.
Going into the half, the Warriors held a one-point advantage after a banked in three-point buzzer beater made it 32-31.
Coming back from intermission, the Golden Eagles tried to get their offense going but were halted by the aggressive rebounding coming from the Warriors. After going down by seven points at the end of the third quarter, the Warriors were relentless on the defensive and offensive boards, making it almost impossible for the Golden Eagles to find extra offensive possessions. Westmont leads the conference in rebounding margin and Lisa Kiefer finished with 20 rebounds by herself along with scoring 12 points.
Navarro continued to stay aggressive and shot 50 percent from the floor at a 9-for-18 clip. The CUI sophomore finished with a team-high 24 points. This marked her fourth game in a row with at least 23 points or more. She is averaging 17.8 ppg and leads the Golden Eagles in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and three-pointers made.
CUI's
Sierra Clark had one of the best games of her career. The graduate student scored 10 points and made two triples. It was her highest scoring game since her freshman year when she scored her career-high of 23 points against Point Loma.
Erika Maggard and freshman
Cadence Tarrant each helped the cause with seven rebounds apiece. The duo combined for 17 points.
The Warriors eventually bested the Golden Eagles with a final score of 69-57.Â
