IRVINE, Calif. - Freshman
Cadence Tarrant tallied a career-high 18 points and collected 13 rebounds and
Izzy Navarro sank two clutch free throws to help Concordia cement a 64-62 victory over visiting Hawai'i Hilo.
Moments after Tarrant gave CUI a 61-60 lead with a layup, Navarro made two critical shots from the charity stripe to put the Golden Eagles ahead to stay one more time.
Senior
Erika Maggard scored all nine of her points in the third quarter to help erase a five-point halftime deficit. CUI outscored the visitors 20-14 in that third period to put themselves in prime position for a fight to the finish.
Point guard
Hannah Vela also was a menace defensively. Both she and Maggard each had three steals. Vela also made a free throw late to help CUI hang on in the final minute of regulation.
Veteran point guard
Sierra Clark was a team-best +10 and handed out three assists. Junior guard
Kayla Cabaccang provided solid minutes as well and canned a pair of timely triples to the delight of the CUI bench.
Ava Dominguez added six points and four boards and finished a +8 while on the court.
Navarro finished with ten points, five rebounds and four assists. She entered the week leading the entire PacWest Conference in scoring at 17.6 ppg.
But the breakout game was a big one for Tarrant to help boost both her confidence and the team's as CUI prepares for road games next week at Vanguard and Westmont.
The Golden Eagles will first drive over to nearby Costa Mesa to face the Lions in their new gym this coming Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's contest.
