HILO, Hawai'i – Playing as a visiting team out on the islands is always a tough task, and Thursday evening's date with the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans was the latest reminder of how true that statement can be.
Luckily for the Concordia Golden Eagles, they were able to fend off the Vulcans and eke out a 92-86 overtime victory.
Jaden Henderson led all scorers with 19 points,
Joseph Locandro contributed 16 and a team-high nine boards and
Charlie Dalton added 15 points.
Kaden Minter also helped the cause with eight rebounds, seven points and a block.
CUI shot 53 percent from the field and outrebounded the Vulcans by four as well.
Senior
Connor Gleason chipped in with seven points – all coming after intermission. Freshman guard
Kevin Haupt also had a handful of huge plays, including a clutch three-pointer late in the second half and a free throw after Gleason fouled out.
The Vulcans forced overtime after converting two free throws in the final second when a whistle was called on the rebound of a missed Hawaii Hilo three-point attempt.
However, CUI regrouped quickly and outscored the opposition 11-5 in the extra frame. Henderson opened the scoring in OT with a tough jumper on the baseline. After that, the final nine points scored by the Green and Gold all came on free throws, with Dalton nailing four of them himself.
Concordia improved to 8-4 overall on the season and 3-2 in PacWest Conference play.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a date with the Sharks of Hawaii Pacific University this Saturday, Jan 4 over in Honolulu.
The men's game is slated to start at 8:30 p.m. PT (6:30 p.m. local HT) and will follow the women's game as part of a PacWest doubleheader.
Both CUI basketball teams then return home and will host Vanguard this coming Thursday, Jan 9 as part of a normal doubleheader at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. PT with the ladies playing first once again.
