A Crazy Eighth Shutout

Golden Eagles Top Vanguard for the Second Time This Season by a Count of 2-0

IRVINE, Calif. – Two impressive streaks were extended on Wednesday night as the Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team clamped down against Vanguard for a 2-0 win.

CUI jumped in front in the third minute when Bella Barrett cashed in on a penalty kick. Barrett now has a stunning five game-winning goals this season and seven for her career. That already ranks in the Top 10 all-time in the CUI record books.

The Golden Eagles are also unbeaten in their last 22 home matches dating back to the first game of the 2023 season. CUI is 18-0-4 during that impressive span.

Concordia did not allow a single shot in the first half and the Lions only managed two shots over the course of the full 90 minutes.

Vanguard looped in its best scoring chance in the last few minutes but Riley Urquiza was in position to record her second and last save of the match. She was not as busy in this one as she often is, but that was just how this particular match played out on the pitch.

Urquiza expanded her school record for career individual shutouts to 28 with this latest clean sheet. The Golden Eagles have outscored the opposition by a wild 19 to 3 margin. Zero opponents have scored more than once so far against CUI.

This match featured another milestone on the offensive end. Reagan Van Horn scored her first career goal in the 75th minute off a pass from Anjelina Nieto.

Next up for Concordia is Senior Day this Saturday, Oct. 18 against Azusa Pacific. The women play at 4 p.m. with the Senior Ceremony slated to start at 3:30 p.m. The men's match will follow at 6:30 p.m.
