IRVINE, Calif. - After playing to a scoreless draw for the first 45 minutes of action on Tuesday, the Concordia University Irvine men's soccer squad was able to break the code and collect three points with a 2-0 win over Jessup.
Playing on home turf for the second time in four days, CUI turned to
Angel Reyes who scored his first goal for the Green and Gold in the 75th minute of action. With the team advancing the ball down the left flank, ultimately a cross by
Jonathan Moreno deflected to Reyes who pushed the ball past multiple defenders as well as the Jessup keeper to put CUI ahead to stay.
CUI kept the pressure on and was able to net an insurance goal in the 88th minute to put the game on ice. The home team managed to earn 10 corner kicks and the second goal came off a delayed attack off a corner.Â
Andy Jun tapped the ball in play to
Miguel Arroyo, who shook a defender and then sent a beautiful cross to a well-positioned
Ryan Smith, who headed the ball in to the net cleanly to commence the Concordia celebration.
The Golden Eagles racked up 23 shots on the evening and were able to put nine of those on target.
Sebastian Marin and the defense in front of him kept things tidy and the sophomore secured a clean sheet over 90 minutes for the second time this season. He and
Griffin Welch had also
combined for a shutout of defending PacWest Champion Westmont last Thursday.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is another key conference match up with Point Loma. Concordia will host the soccer doubleheader this Saturday, Oct. 11 with the women playing first at 4 p.m. PT followed by the men's match at 6:30 p.m.
