Golden Eagles Clash Against the Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Heading down to Axelrood Aquatics Center, the Concordia women's water polo team took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the second time this season. The two teams recently faced off at the Triton Invitational and the rematch proved to be a challenge for the Golden Eagles.

Despite their offensive efforts, Concordia was outscored in every period. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas took the lead early on and made it difficult for Concordia to get on the board.

Anna Tyukasz was the sole scorer in the first period for Concordia, then added two more in the third, and one in the fourth. Her dual goals in the third were only a minute apart. Freshman Tyukasz has repeatedly shown her offensive prowess in the water. This marks her eighth multi-scoring match of the season.

The terrific trio Emeline Smiley, Presley Acosta, and Sofia Smith scored a goal each and made a dent in the Athenas' defense. Their combined efforts allowed the Golden Eagles to jump from four to seven goals overall.

Unfortunately, the early lead made it hard for Concordia to bridge the gap. The Golden Eagles were met with pressure and struggled to keep pace. The goals for each period were as follows: 1-4, 1-3, 2-5, and 3-4 to make the final score CUI 7 – CMS 16. Smiley was the last Golden Eagle to score before the game's end.

NEXT UP: The Concordia women's water polo team will take on Pacific on Friday, Feb, 21. The match kicks off at 6 p.m. in Stockton, California.
