ROCKLIN, Calif. -
Kaden Minter dropped 20 points,
Joseph Locandro added 14, and
Jayce Catchings led a spirited effort on the boards to propel the Golden Eagles past the Jessup Warriors on Thursday night.
Minter nailed a three-pointer with about 1:20 left in overtime to put CUI in front 67-65. He then iced the game in the final seconds with two more free throws to close out the scoring. The talented sophomore also hit a go-ahead layup with under two minutes to play in regulation before Jessup forced overtime.
In the first half, Concordia University Irvine built a 17-point lead late and put the pressure on the host Warriors in their first men's basketball match up as PacWest Conference foes. Locandro gave the Golden Eagles a boost by hitting a couple treys. Six of his points came during a strong sequence midway through the first half that saw him convert multiple shots in the paint and another off an offensive rebound.
Winning extra possessions was critical to CUI earning a road win and staying in the hunt for the postseason. As a team, Concordia hustled to collect a whopping 18 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded Jessup 44 to 33.
Logan Cremonesi added seven rebounds off the bench to match both Locandro and Catchings' totals in that important category.
Starters
Charlie Dalton and
Connor Gleason combined for 15 points as well. Dalton was a team-best +16 for Concordia while Minter was a +15 in his own right.
If CUI can win their remaining three games, they still have a chance to make the conference tournament. There is a logjam for the remaining three spots up for grabs after Point Loma, Biola and Academy of Art reserved their places at the tourney table. The top six teams eligble make the PacWest Conference Championships (Jessup, Menlo and Vanguard are not eligible this season due to their transition period from NAIA to NCAA DII).
