IRVINE, Calif. - Heading into the doubleheader against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, the Golden Eagles looked to have their season-starting win carryover into today's doubleheader.
Game 1 - CUI 5 CSUDH 14
In the top of the first, the Toros opened up the game with hot bats, scoring 3 runs and opening up the game with a strong offensive attack. The Golden Eagles didn't respond immediately; however, the bats finally started to make some noise at the bottom of the third.
Isaiah Walz started the scoring show for the Golden Eagles, hitting a single to right center that scored
Cameron Slessor, but it was only the beginning. Next at bat,
Wyatt Madison was extremely aggressive early in the count and hit a single that scored
Isaiah Walz and
Haku Dudoit, tying the game 3-3. Still not done with the inning,
Landry Spitler also singled to left field, scoring
Wyatt Madison, and the Golden Eagles took the lead 4-3.
After that exciting inning, CUI couldn't do a whole lot with the bats for the rest of the game, and the Toros took game one with a final score of 14-5.
Game 2 - CUI 7 CSUDH 3
Starting at the mound for the Golden Eagles in game two was
Josh Pugh, who was dealing through four innings having no earned runs against him and no hits. Pugh pitched a great game, going six innings only allowing three runs on three hits.
Golden Eagles started the offense in the game at the bottom of the third with
Owen Gott hitting a single through the left side, getting CUI their first base runner.
Tank Espalin followed in Gott's footsteps, hitting a double and putting two in the scoring position. The first RBI of the game came from
Haku Dudoits single to left field.
Wanting to take advantage of runners in scoring position still,
Wyatt Madison was aggressive in his at-bat, swinging on the first pitch, blasting a shot out to left field, making it a 3-0 game. Wanting to add more to their total, the bats were hot yet again in the fifth. Starting with
Sawyer Voortman, hitting a two-run shot, making it a 5-1 game, closely followed by
Owen Gott yet again producing for the Golden Eagles, who also hit a two-run RBI, making it a 7-1 game heading into the sixth.
The Toros tried to make it interesting in the top of the seventh, but eventually, Connor Meehan closed out the game, and the Golden Eagles won with a final score of 7-4.
Next up for CUI is a rematch game between these two teams at Toro's field on Monday the 10th at 2:00 pm.
