CUI Baseball Takes Three of Four From APU

Kaiser, Meehan & Hyde Combine For Shutout in Series Finale

AZUSA, Calif. – The Concordia Golden Eagles ended up with the upper hand this year against the Azusa Pacific baseball team, splitting the final two games of the weekend after a dominant 13-0 victory in the series finale.

With three wins in four games against APU, the Concordia Golden Eagles moved within one game of Biola in the standings for the fourth and final spot for the upcoming PacWest Conference Tournament.

CUI has also won six of its last seven contests and defeated nationally-ranked Westmont and Point Loma a combined three times in the month of March.

Game 1: APU 7, CUI 2

After sweeping the Friday doubleheader in Irvine, the only blemish for Concordia in the series with the Cougars was the first game on Saturday.

All-American pitcher Jake Covey scooted through two clean innings to open the game and Wyatt Madison put Concordia up 1-0 with an early RBI single. The Cougars only had one good inning against Covey

APU added an insurance run in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-2 to round out the scoring.

Game 2: CUI 13, APU 0

In his first start since being named the National DII Pitcher of the Week by the NCBWA, sophomore Matthew Kaiser continued where he left off after last Saturday's epic no-hitter in the rematch. Kaiser tossed five scoreless innings and scattered five hits against the Cougars while working around four walks. He struck out five and lowered his season ERA to a sterling 3.38 in the process.

Conor Meehan pitched a spotless sixth inning and struck out a pair. Jack Hyde closed things out in the ninth as the trio of pitchers were able to preserve the combined shutout.

Offensively, David Baruch II got things started with a two-run double in the first frame. Isaiah Walz followed with a RBI single to plate Baruch and make it 3-0 quickly.

Landry Spitler and Wyatt Madison followed suit in the second inning by knocking in one run apiece to push the CUI lead to 5-0.

The Green and Gold managed to put up six runs in the fifth to really bust the game wide open. CUI added another crooked number in the sixth thanks to a passed ball and a RBI double by Haku Dudoit that scored Vito Fowler.

Next up for the Golden Eagles is a four-game series back at home against Fresno Pacific. The opening doubleheader gets underway at 2 p.m. PT on Friday, April 4 with game two to follow approximately at 5:30 p.m. The two squads will get another twin billing that Saturday as well.
