CUI Softball Splits Doubleheader at Chaminade

HONOLULU, HI. – The CUI softball team split their doubleheader against Chaminade on the road in Honolulu, taking the first game 5-1 before falling short 4-5 in the second.

Game 1: CUI 5, Chaminade 1

The Golden Eagles started the day strong with a 5-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader. Kayla Rodgers got things rolling early with a base hit single to right-center and stole a base. Shelli Faulk also made her presence known with a key single up the middle.

In the 2nd inning, CUI broke through when Kayla Simpson hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Campbell and putting the Golden Eagles on the board. The 4th inning saw more offensive fireworks, as Shelby Pfeiler singled to right field, setting up Simpson's 3-run home run to center field, giving CUI a commanding 4-1 lead.

In the 5th, it was Audrey Robles' turn to shine, as she doubled to left-center, scoring Rodgers for the final run of the game. Another base hit by Jessica Im helped keep the offense rolling.

On the mound, Jayden Nishi earned the win, improving to 7-0 on the season. Nishi kept Chaminade's offense in check, allowing just one run to secure the victory.

Game 2: CUI 4, Chaminade 5

Game 2 was a tight battle, with Chaminade edging out CUI 5-4. The Golden Eagles struck first in the top of the 2nd when freshman Caitlynn Campbell singled, and Shelli Faulk followed with a single down the right field line, advancing Campbell. A groundout by Alexa Couto then scored Campbell to give CUI the early lead.

In the 3rd, the offense kept up the momentum as Jessica Im singled, followed by a hit from Rodgers to right field, and Pfeiler singled, scoring Rodgers making the score 2-2.

Chaminade answered back, and by the bottom of the 6th, the game was 2-5. Top of the 7th, Pfeiler doubled down the left-field line scoring Robles, who had walked prior. Pinch runner Maddie Cortez came in for Pfeiler. Faulk reached first base on a fielding error that allowed Cortez to score, but it wasn't enough as Chaminade closed out the game for a 5-4 victory.
