ATHERTON, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team faced off against newly added Menlo College to the MPSF conference. The Golden Eagles had stiff competition and did not let up easily but the Oaks came up with a four set win with scores 27-25, 33-35, 25-19, and 25-18.
Ties Cornelissen led CUI with 18 kills marking a season high for the sophomore. Cornelissen hit another double double with 18 kills and an impressive 14 digs from the middle back.
Makua Marumoto and
Christian Galoppo was also a force on the offense reaching 11 and 10 kills each. These three players hit an impressive .300 and above throughout the match.
Nathan Habermas and
John Rzepniewski were in the middle for the Green and Gold and each tallied three kills and a combined four blocks.
Cruse Ae'a was in the back row and had five digs while
Makai Lipson ran the offense and finished with 40 assists and six digs.
In the second set the Oaks had set point but Marumoto was at the back line and had help from
Connor Dell and Cornelissen to tie the set at 24 a-piece. The score continued to toggle between the teams and went the distance. CUI was able to come up with the win with a jaw dropping 35-33 score. Menlo went on to win the next to sets and take the win over the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles will look for a rematch again Saturday against Menlo with a 7 p.m. start time.
