Tatro Time Sparks Classic Comeback

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine softball team split a doubleheader on Friday at Great Park, falling in the opener before storming back in a thrilling walk-off win to beat the No. 3 team in the country in the nightcap.

Game 1: Nebraska–Kearney 7, CUI 3

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the second inning as Ariana Robles tripled down the right-field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Maddy Kneubuhle.

Nebraska–Kearney chipped away offensively, building a lead behind timely extra-base hits. CUI showed late fight in the seventh inning when Kailani Tatro stepped in as a pinch hitter and crushed her first collegiate home run—a two-run shot to center field and her first hit as a Golden Eagle—but the rally came up short as the Lopers held on for the 7–3 win.

Game 2: CUI 5, No. 3 Western Washington 4

The nightcap delivered instant drama as Concordia erased a three-run deficit with a wild comeback capped by a walk-off finish against a nationally-ranked team.

Trailing No. 3 Western Washington 4-1 entering the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles ignited the rally once again off the bat of Kailani Tatro, who delivered a two-run double to the fence, driving in a pair and tying the game. CUI took advantage of defensive pressure to even the score before heading to the final frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Veronica Moore reached base and Audrey Robles followed with a double. An error allowed Robles to score the winning run, sealing the 5-4 victory for the Golden Eagles.

In the circle, Kacie Gossett was lights out in the seventh, striking out two to earn the win.

Concordia University Irvine (3-1) returns to action on Sunday against Colorado State Pueblo with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m. at Great Park.
