SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – After jumping back into the Top 25 IWSOC DII national rankings, the Golden Eagles proved they aim to stay there with a 1-0 triumph over Dominican on Wednesday afternoon.
Ranked No. 24 in the latest national poll, Concordia University Irvine turned to two familiar faces to generate the goal that would wind up being the difference-maker against the Penguins.
Ashley Grubert added to her league-leading total for goals by converting a penalty kick in the 36th minute of action. Fellow senior forward
Bella Barrett took a shot that was knocked down by a Penguin who was called for an obvious hand ball. That led to Grubert getting a chance from the spot and the Irvine, Calif. native cashed in for her third PK goal of the year to put Concordia in front 1-0. The senior who wears jersey number 10 now has 10 goals.
The score stayed that way into the second half and beyond.
Concordia's suffocating defense only allowed two shots to be taken by the Penguins. It was a rather defensive game overall as the Golden Eagles were credited with four total shots and put two on goal. Dominican had only one corner kick all afternoon and Concordia did not have a single one.
Goalkeeper
Christina Sidoti came up with one save and the defense in front of her worked in tandem to keep the Penguins at bay as the midfielders for both teams were extremely busy battling for possession constantly.
CUI visits Jessup on Friday at high noon before returning home for the remainder of fall break weekend. The Golden Eagles have a handful of road games on the docket before their final home game of the season which will be Senior Day on Halloween against Biola.
