POMONA, Calif. – Fans enjoyed a great match between two of the Top 15 teams in NCAA DII on Thursday night as No. 13 Concordia University Irvine visited No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona.
Together the first and second ranked teams in the recent IWSOC west region rankings battled to a 1-1 draw.
Hopefully nobody got up to go to the bathroom or get a snack during the 53rd minute of regulation.
That's because the only two goals of the match occurred within 40 seconds of each other.
Ashley Grubert scored to put Concordia in front 1-0.
Avery Munoz pushed the ball up the middle of the field before leading
Bella Barrett down the right flank. Barrett crossed to the center of the box where Grubert was able to ultimately loop the ball over the head of the keeper before she or anyone else could deflect it out of harm's way.
Grubert now has four goals on the young season. That leads all current CUI women's soccer players this year.
As thrilling as that was, Cal Poly Pomona answered quickly after play resumed as Charlie Gallardo unleashed a far shot towards the top left corner for the equalizer.
The two squads played evenly the rest of the way, but neither team could capitalize on any further scoring chances.
CUI continues its non-conference slate this Saturday, Sept 12 with a rare matinee at 11:00 a.m. PT against Simon Fraser University.
The Red Leafs were recently ranked No. 21 in the IWSOC DII national poll but fell out of the rankings last week after losing to Cal Poly Pomona 1-0. SFU bounced back with a 3-1 road win over Vanguard on Thursday.
This will be the start of a four-game homestand for the Golden Eagles, with a couple matches still before the PacWest Conference opener against Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday, Sept. 26.
