SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team received a second chance to knock off the Westmont Warriors in their rematch on Wednesday night.
Kaden Minter knocked down six three-pointers and had 22 points to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring against their PacWest Conference opponent. This marks the sixth time this season that the Mater Dei High School alum has canned at least five treys or more in a game.
Minter's teammate
MaCarhy Morris added 15 points with his usual array of floaters and mid-range jumpers to help the cause.
Senior
Jackson Tucker, fellow swingman
Ben Krystkowiak and sophomore guard
Kevin Haupt combined for 13 points off the bench.
One of the biggest plays of the night came with CUI trailing 66-57 late in the second half.
Nick Corbett grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out to Minter for an immediate triple while he got fouled. CUI cut the lead to four points moments later.
However, Westmont was able to fend off the late charge and ultimately won by double digits, 76-65.
Both teams took care of the ball as neither team committed more than seven turnovers for the entire game.
Westmont did win the rebounding battle 32 to 24 as the home team earned a few more extra possessions. In addition, the Warriors shot 85 percent from the charity stripe and made 17 of their 20 free throws, while CUI was only 6-for-12 at the line.
The Golden Eagles held the Warriors to just 33 percent shooting from downtown (7-for-21). However, Westmont also played good defense and held Concordia to just under 40 percent shooting overall from the field.
