Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after facing nationally-ranked UC San Diego down in La Jolla, the Concordia Golden Eagles welcomed the Tritons to town for a Thursday night rematch.
In the first set, CUI rattled off three straight points to take an early 8-6 lead. The opening stanza was tied 23-23 and was anyone's game before both teams started trading service errors. UCSD eked out a 27-25 win to go up 1-0.
Concordia was led on offense by
Logan Whitaker who racked up 10 kills. Whitaker skied high early in the second set for a resounding block to give the Green and Gold a big boost. CUI led for the majority of the second set, but the Tritons rallied late for a sneaky 26-24 win to go up 2-0.
The third set was another back-and-forth battle. Concordia opened up an 8-4 advantage but again the Tritons turned the tables and eked out a narrow victory down the stretch. The final margin of a 3-0 score did not meet the eye test as the Golden Eagles went toe-to-toe with the visiting Tritons the entire night.
Freshman setter
Matt Fisher handed out 24 helpers.
Kai Vogel and
Ties Cornelissen each scooped up five digs apiece.
Next up for CUI is a pair of home matches with Stanford next week. The Cardinal will be in Irvine on Friday, Feb 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21 with both games starting at 6 p.m. PT
