IRVINE, Calif. – CUI baseball wrapped up the series against Chaminade taking three of the four games and claiming the first PacWest series win. Strong pitching and timely hitting were key as CUI lineup delivered clutch hits while the bullpen shut down Chaminade rallies.
Game 1: CUI 5, CUH 4 (12 Inn.)
Wyatt Madison started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and played a pivotal role on both sides of the ball. At the plate he went 3-for-5 while hitting a solo home run to put a run on the board first. On the mound the junior was electric in his five innings of work. He allowed just four hits and two runs and struck out an impressive 10 batters which marks a career high.
After the solo shot to right field from Madison in the first CUI scored another three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Walz started the inning with a double down the right field line.
Dylan Knowles and
Landry Spitler both reached on an error from the Silverswords helping them drive in two. Catcher
Ian Stewart singled scoring the fourth run for CUI.
Isaiah Walz also had a standout performance as he finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. The shortstop was on base four times in the game and hit the walk off single to bring
Sawyer Voortman home in extra innings finishing up in the 12
th frame.
Nolan Caira chipped in with a 1-for-4 while Voortman provided a spark off the bench and in the outfield.
Nicolas Erickson and
Ian Stewart each added a hit. The team saw additional appearances from
Carter Vanderhook,
Michael Mira, and
Cole Quillin coming into the game.
Game 2: CUI 2, CUH 3
Catcher
Cooper Marinelli delivered the most impactful swing of the game driving in both of the Green and Gold runs. Designated hitter Madison set the tone offensively going 2-for-3 to lead the team in hits.
Spitler and
Makamae Du Pont each recorded a hit and scored a run. Du Pont later gave way to pinch runner
Mason Overacker as the Eagles looked to create added pressure on the base paths.
Senior
Evan Langer started and worked 4.2 innings. He allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out five. Relievers
Riley Ricken and
Josh Pugh came in to pitch the remainder of the game. Pugh tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and surrendered just one hit and needed only 25 pitches to record four fly outs and three ground outs.
The Golden Eagles will host Hawai'i Pacific for a four game stanza starting Wednesday Feb. 18 with 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. start time. They will finish the series Thursday Feb. 19 with another 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. start times.
