Irvine, Calif -The Concordia University Irvine softball team made the most of an unexpected home-field opportunity Saturday, splitting a doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino at Golden Eagles Stadium. Originally scheduled to be played in San Bernardino, the games were moved to Irvine due to field conditions, with the Coyotes still serving as the designated home team. Despite that technicality, the Golden Eagles protected their field and closed the day in dominant fashion, bouncing back from a tight 3–1 loss in game one to earn an emphatic 8–1 victory in game two.
CUI 1, CSUSB 3
In the opener, CUI struck first in the second inning when Kaliya Yco lifted a sacrifice fly to score Audrey Robles. Jessica Im paced the offense with two hits, including a double, while Robles and Morgan Kneubuhler each added base knocks as the Golden Eagles matched CSUSB with five hits. Kacie Gossett was strong in the circle, throwing a complete game with five strikeouts over six innings. A pair of third-inning runs proved to be the difference, but Concordia remained within striking distance throughout in a competitive contest.
CUI 8, CSUSB 1
Game two showcased a statement response from the Golden Eagles. After surrendering a solo home run in the first inning, CUI took control with a three-run fourth. Caitlynn Campbell drew an RBI walk, Alyssa Struthers delivered a run-scoring single, and Crystal Alatorre added a sacrifice fly to give Concordia a 3–1 lead. The fifth inning put the game out of reach. Jessica Im and Kaliya Yco launched back-to-back home runs to center field, igniting the dugout. Struthers later reached on an error that plated another run, and Alatorre capped the five-run frame with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 8–1.
Morgan Kneubuhler led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored, while Im and Yco each collected two hits. Alatorre finished with three RBIs, and Struthers drove in two as CUI totaled nine hits and eight runs.
In the circle, Jayden Nishi was outstanding, improving to 3–1 after allowing just one run on five hits across five innings while striking out five and walking none. Kira Morris closed the door with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and helping secure the convincing win.
The split moves Concordia to 10–4 on the season and highlights the team's resilience. Even as the designated visitor on their own field, the Golden Eagles responded with poise and power, finishing the day with momentum and a decisive victory.
