CUI Comes Back To Stun The Sharks in Extras

IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine baseball team salvaged a Wednesday split in its doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific University with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the series finale.

Both teams collected two wins over the course of the four games played in the last 48 hours. The games were moved up to Tuesday and Wednesday to beat the impending rain in Orange County that is expected on Thursday.

Game 1: HPU 6, CUI 1

Dominic Nunes pitched the first two frames on Wednesday's opener and sent the Sharks down 1-2-3 to begin the first inning. Freshman Caden Miller then came on in the third and did not allow a hit in his first two innings of work.  During that period, shortstop Isaiah Walz started a smooth double play with second baseman Nolan Caira and first baseman Makamae DuPont to close out the fourth. Miller finished with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Sawyer Voortman helped the cause with a solid RBI single through the right side in the third inning. That plated third baseman Landry Spitler to cut HPU's lead in half and make it 2-1.

Alessandro Martinez ate up two more innings before giving way to Nathan Hunter who silenced the Sharks over the final two frames. Unfortunately, HPU built an insurmountable lead and hung on to win the matinee 6-1.

Game 2: CUI 3, HPU 2 (8 innings)

In what was originally planned as a seven inning game, both teams had other plans. Wyatt Madison smacked a RBI single to right field in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1 as Jordan Bolden hustled home.

HPU struck first in extras with a RBI double by Tyler Arnold to make it 2-1 Sharks, but Concordia thankfully had last ups.

Nolan Caira reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded and Walz scored the tying run with two outs. Madison moved up to third on the play and eventually scored when a ball by the pitcher got by the catcher and allowed the junior to scamper home and slide in safely to end the game in a chaotic but therapeutic way for the home squad.

Shane Timmons (3-1) came on in relief and pitched three innings for the victory. Aside from the clutch hit by Arnold, Timmons kept the Sharks at bay and gave his teammates a chance to win it at the dish, which they ultimately did to the delight of the home dugout.

CUI improved to 7-9 overall on the young season. More importantly, the Golden Eagles are not 5-3 in conference play after going 3-1 against Chaminade and 2-2 with the Sharks.

On Deck for Concordia is a trip to Northern California with dates set up against Jessup and Menlo next week during spring break. The series with the Warriors begins on Monday, Feb. 23 and then later in the week CUI visits Menlo beginning on Friday, Feb 27th.
