ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team is on the road up north this week as they first take on Jessup in a two day series. After losing the first game CUI bounced back with a 7-1 win in the second game.
Game 1: CUI 1, JESSUP 8
After back-to-back singles from
Makamae Du Pont and
Sawyer Voortman Nolan Caira hit an RBI double to right field to bring in the one run for the Golden Eagles in the second frame.
Four Golden Eagles recorded a hit throughout the lineup. Du Pont led the Green and Gold going 3-for-4 at the plate while Voortman was right behind adding two hits.
Freshman
Shane Timmons took the loss despite delivering a solid start working 6.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out one. He kept the game within reach by inducing seven fly outs and seven ground outs.
Josh Pugh,
Riley Ricken, and
Troy May came in as relievers and pitched a combined 1.2 innings while striking out two batters and allowing three hits.
Game 2: CUI 7, JESSUP 1
Matthew Kaiser delivered a strong performance on the mound earning the win to even his record at 2–2 with a composed seven inning outing. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out four. Kaiser effectively limited hard contact surrendering only one extra-base hit.
Leading the charge was third baseman
Landry Spitler who delivered the game's biggest swing. Spitler went 1-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. His blast provided early momentum and set the tone for an offense that kept pressure on throughout the contest.
Wyatt Madison fueled the middle of the order finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Dylan Knowles turned in one of the most complete performances of the day. Knowles went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs driving in key insurance runs.
At the top of the lineup
Isaiah Walz reached base with a hit and a walk while Nic Erickson was a steady presence as well going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Du Pont added an RBI on a 1-for-4 afternoon. Behind the plate
Cooper Marinelli handled the defensive duties smoothly recording four putouts while adding a hit and a run scored.
Schedule Update:
CUI will finish their series against Jessup on Wednesday Feb. 24 with 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. start times. The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday but moved due to impending rain.
The Golden Eagles will finish their trip up north with Menlo series starting Friday Feb. 27 with 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. times.
