Extra Innings? No Problem.

CUI Pushes Across Five Runs In The Eighth Inning

Lake Elsinore, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine softball team closed out the D2 West Coast Challenge in emphatic fashion, rallying for a 7–2 extra-inning victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon. In a tightly contested finale hosted by Cal State San Marcos, the Golden Eagles showcased their resilience and depth, breaking a late tie with a five-run eighth inning to pull away and finish the tournament on a high note.

The game was a pitching duel early, highlighted by an outstanding start from Jayden Nishi, who added another strong performance to her resume. Nishi kept the Otters off balance through 6.1 innings, allowing just four hits and two runs—only one earned—while striking out five and working through traffic with poise. Her command in key moments gave CUI the platform it needed to stay within striking distance as the offense found its rhythm later in the game.

After Concordia struck first with two runs in the sixth, CSUMB answered to even the score and force extra innings. From there, the Golden Eagles erupted offensively in the eighth, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs. RBI singles from Morgan Kneubuhler and Alyssa Struthers, along with aggressive baserunning and timely execution, broke the game wide open. Kacie Gossett came on in relief and slammed the door, retiring all six batters she faced to secure the win and improve to 4–0 on the season.

With the victory, CUI capped the D2 West Coast Challenge with a statement performance, blending dominant pitching, clutch hitting, and late-game composure. The Golden Eagles leave the weekend battle-tested and confident, carrying strong momentum into the next stretch of the season.

Gossett and Audrey Robles were both named to the All-Tournament Team as well. Robles had 2 home runs during the three-day tournament, and finished with 5 hits and 4 RBI overall.
