IRVINE, Calif. – The offense for Concordia University Irvine came alive in a strong 25 hit performance in a double header day against Biola. The Golden Eagles consistently put runners on base and capitalized on scoring opportunities generating momentum over the course of the games and split on the day with scores 12-5 and 10-15.
CUI 12, BIOLA 5
Shane Timmons started on the bump for CUI who worked six innings to earn the win and improve to 4–2 on the season. Timmons allowed seven hits and five runs while walking one and striking out one.
Caden Miller came in as reliever and shut the door having delivered three scoreless innings. Miller did not allow a hit and faced just nine batters.
The Golden Eagles wasted little time taking control right off the bat erupting for a five run first inning. CUIs offense came out aggressive and immediately put pressure on the Biola pitching staff. In the opening frame
Isaiah Walz jump started the rally with a two run homer to left field giving CUI an early 2–0 lead.
The momentum continued just moments later when
Nicolas Erickson ripped an RBI triple down the left field line to score
Makamae Du Pont. Erickson later crossed the plate on a wild pitch and
Ian Stewart capped the inning with an RBI single giving Concordia a commanding 5–0 advantage after just one inning.
Biola chipped away in the third inning scoring three runs and cutting the deficit with a 5-3 score but the Green and Gold answered in the fourth.
Isaiah Walz came home during a double play sequence to extend the margin to 7–3.
Landry Spitler continued the momentum for CUI and delivered another run for CUI bringing Stewart across home. The Golden Eagles capitalized on wild pitches in the seventh inning to plate three more runs stretching their advantage to 11–5 and putting the game firmly in their control. Stewart added the finishing touch in the eighth with a sacrifice fly scoring
Anthony Pacino and pushing the final margin to 12–5.
CUI 10, BIOLA 15
Starter
Matthew Kaiser battled through 2.2 innings and moved to 2-3 on the season.
Riley Ricken came in for 2.1 innings and helped stabilize the middle innings inducing five flyouts. Closing the game
Luka Brancato allowed three hits and generated six outs through solid contact management with four flyouts and two groundouts.
Biola jumped out to an early lead in the first inning take a 3-0 lead. The Golden Eagles answered in the bottom half of the inning with
Dylan Knowles delivering an RBI double down the left-field line. CUI continued to chip away in the second inning when
Landry Spitler hit an RBI single trimming the deficit to 3–2. Biola broke the game open with a big third inning stringing together multiple hits to extend its lead to 10–2.
Knowles sparked the Eagles again in the fourth inning blasting a three run home run to left center that scored
Wyatt Madison and Walz cutting the margin to 10–5 and injecting new life into the Golden Eagles dugout.
After Biola added four runs in the fifth Concordia continued its push. The Green and Gold plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Madison drew a bases-loaded walk and Knowles was hit by a pitch with the bases full bringing the score to 14–7.
The Golden Eagles offense stayed aggressive in the sixth as
Cooper Marinelli launched a solo home run to left-center field further narrowing the gap. This marks the freshman's first home run of the season. In the seventh
Makamae Du Pont lined a double down the left field line that drove in Madison and
Sawyer Voortman pulling Concordia within five runs. Biola was able to close out the game in the seventh and force a split on the day with a 15-10 victory.
The Golden Eagles will finish their series with Biola Saturday Mar. 14 with 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. start times.
