IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's tennis team played against Stanton in a thriller on their senior day. CUI honored their lone senior
Bryn Johnson prior to the matches while coming up just short with a final 4-3 score.
CUI struck first in the No. 1 slot in doubles with a commanding performance from Johnson and
Keona Gutierrez Dearmond who controlled the match from the outset over the Elks. The duo cruised to a decisive 6–1 victory setting the tone early and giving the Golden Eagles an initial edge.
Stanton responded in the second slot as they held CUI
Kristyna Dvorakova and
Ashley Aziz to 6–0. The deciding match as the No. 3 pair proved to be the most competitive of the day. The Elks battled hard in a back-and-forth contest against the Green and Gold
Mianna Robinson and Mikayla Allen. Despite a strong effort from Stanton the Golden Eagles ultimately edged out the match 7–5 in a thrilling finish, securing the doubles win.
In singles the senior
Bryn Johnson showcased remarkable determination after dropping the opening set 6–3. Johnson battled through a tightly contested second set, prevailing in a 7–6 tiebreak before taking full control in the third set with a 6–1 finish.
CUI carried that momentum into the second slot with another comeback performance from Dvorakova. After falling 6–3 in the first set to the Elks Dvorakova responded with authority dominating the remainder of the match 6–0 and 6–2.
At No. 3 Gutierrez Dearmond showed strong competitiveness pushing Stanton in a three set fight. Gutierrez claimed the second set 6–4 and kept the match tightly contested.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the CUI tennis courts Monday Mar. 23 as they take on Middlebury with a 3:30 p.m. slated start time.
