CUI Takes Control with Wins Over No. 5 Point Loma

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team made an exciting statement in the series against No. 5 Point Loma winning the first two games on the road. The Golden Eagles offense came alive in both contests while the pitching staff kept Point Loma to limited scoring chances holding them to only two runs in each game.

Game 1: CUI 9, PLNU 2

The Golden Eagles received a steady and effective performance on the mound led by freshman Shane Timmons who earned the win to improve to 6–2 on the season. Timmons worked 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and kept Point Loma in check during key moments. He was backed up by Caden Miller who delivered a strong relief outing. Miller tossed 3.1 scoreless innings giving up just two hits while working around five walks and adding a strikeout.

The Golden Eagles lineup delivered a well-rounded offensive effort highlighted by a standout performance from Sawyer Voortman who went 4-for-4 and set the tone at the top of the order. Isaiah Walz contributed in key moments with two RBIs while David Baruch III made his impact felt by scoring twice and driving in a run. Ian Stewart turned in a strong outing behind the plate going 2-for-4.

The Golden Eagles broke the game wide open in the third putting up seven runs. Wyatt Madison ignited the rally with a triple down the right field line bringing in the first run. Moments late another run crossed due to a Sea Lion fielding error and extend the early lead.

CUI continued to capitalize as Nicolas Erickson drove in a run with a sharp single up the middle and would eventually steal home. Baruch III added to the surge with Baruch ripping an RBI single and advancing into scoring position on the play. The inning kept rolling as Stewart delivered an RBI double to left followed by Walz lining a single down the left field line to cap a remarkable seven run outburst.

Point Loma managed to respond in the bottom half of the inning and again in the sixth trimming the deficit to 7–2. The Green and Gold tacked on insurance runs in the seventh once again applying pressure that led to defensive miscues from the Sea Lions. Baruch's sacrifice bunt forced an error that brought in a run and Walz added his second RBI of the game with a single to right center.

CUI 6, PLNU 2

Point Loma struck first in the opening inning with a solo home run. However the Golden Eagles quickly responded in the second inning by taking advantage of an error. Ian Stewart drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice while a throwing error allowed additional advancement on the bases. The game remained tight until the fifth inning when Erickson launched a three-run homer to right-center field extending the lead to 5–1. Point Loma managed to scratch across a run in the sixth inning but Walz added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field.
