MERCED, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball bounced back to win Saturday against UC Merced after dropping Friday's match. The Golden Eagles won in three straight sets with scores 25-13, 25-21, and 25-20.
The Golden Eagles took control over the match in the first two sets as long runs was a key factor in keeping the momentum alive on their side of the court. The third set was closer as UC Merced had the game tied at 20-20 but CUI broke away to close out the match 25-20.
Leading the offensive charge was
Christian Galoppo who delivered an outstanding performance with 13 kills on 21 attempts posting an impressive .571 hitting percentage.
Close behind was
David Mansilla who added 11 kills on 25 swings for a solid .320 hitting percentage.
Troy Fleming contributed across multiple facets of the game tallying six kills
Paul Schulteis was solid out of the middle throughout the match recording 4 kills on just 6 attempts without an error for a remarkable .667 hitting percentage. He also made his presence felt from the service line with three aces and contributed at the net with four block assists.
Cole Wachter registered five kills while
Kai Vogel added three kills.
Running the offense smoothly was setter
Connor Orrock who dished out an impressive 39 assists orchestrating a fluid attack that kept the opposition off balance. Orrock also chipped in defensively with two digs. Defensively CUI was anchored by strong back-row play particularly from sophomore
Joseph Sowers who led the team with 11 digs.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action in the CU Arena against Jessup for a two game series starting Thursday Apr. 9 followed by Friday Apr. 10 with 6 p.m. start times for both.
