Timmons Shuts Down Vulcans Offense

HILO, HAWAI'I – The CUI baseball team started their series against Hawai'i Hilo Sunday and ended up splitting on the day. The Golden Eagles came out in the first game erupting with 11 runs and held the Vulcans to no runs and end in seven innings. UHH came back in the second game with a final score 5-2 to a game off the Green and Gold.

Game 1: CUI 11, UHH 0 (7 Innings)

Concordia University Irvine wasted no time taking control and never looked back rolling to an 11–0 victory in just seven innings behind a relentless offensive attack and steady production throughout the lineup. The Golden Eagles struck early in the first inning when Dylan Knowles delivered a clutch double down the right field line driving in both Isaiah Walz and Landry Spitler to give CUI a quick 2–0 advantage. That early momentum carried straight into the second inning where the offense continued to pile on.

Walz added to the lead with an RBI single to right scoring David Baruch III and moving runners into scoring position. Moments later Wyatt Madison lifted a sacrifice fly bringing home Ian Stewart and extending the lead to 4–0.

CUI's bats stayed hot in the third inning with a three run surge. Stewart lined an RBI single to right scoring Nolan Caira and Walz followed with an RBI single. Madison capped the inning with his second sacrifice fly of the game again to make it 7–0.

The Green and Gold kept their foot on the gas in the fourth inning as Jordan Bolden singled up the middle to bring home Nicolas Erickson pushing the lead to eight runs.

After a couple of quieter innings Stewart reignited the offense in the sixth with a solo home run. Bolden put the finishing touches on the blowout in the seventh launching a two-run homer to left field that scored Nolan Caira and sealed the 11–0 margin.

Shane Timmons delivered a strong and efficient outing on the mound earning the win to improve to 8–2 on the season. The freshman tossed six shutout innings allowing just four hits while issuing only one walk and striking out one keeping opposing hitters off balance all game long. In relief Dominic Nunes closed things out with a clean seventh inning retiring all three batters he faced and adding a strikeout to preserve the combined shutout.

Game 2: CUI 2, UHH 5

Matthew Kaiser started on the mound and went five innings while giving up five hits and striking out four. Caden Miller came in for four at bats and allowed two hits and one run while Nathan Hunter came in to close out the inning for CUI.

The Golden Eagles kicked the second game off to right where they left off in the first game. Knowles hit a two run single to left field to take an early 2-0 lead in the first frame. The Vulcans answered back in the bottom of the inning tying the game at two a-piece. UHH scored in the fifth and sixth inning to take the lead and held their lead until the end.

Walz, Knowles, and Stewart led the charge for CUI with two hits. These three players each hit a double while Knowles would be the only one to bring in RBIs for the Green and Gold. Spitler and Baruch III each contributed with a hit.

The Golden Eagles will finish the series against Hawai'i Hilo Monday Apr. 13 with 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. start times.
