Box Score 2 HILO, HAWAI'I – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team finished the series against Hawai'i Hilo on a high note being able to split the series. After losing the first game in extra innings CUI bounced back to take a commanding 7-1 win. The Golden Eagles move to 24-20 overall and 22-14 in PacWest play.
Game 1: CUI 5, UHH 6 (10 Innings)
CUI battled all the way into extra innings before narrowly falling 6–5 to Hawaii Hilo in a hard-fought contest in the first game of the day.
Wyatt Madison started on the mound for the Green and Gold who worked 5.2 innings while allowing four runs on six hits and striking out four.
Evan Langer followed with an effective relief appearance tossing 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and surrendering just one run while adding a strikeout.
Caden Miller took the ball late and battled through two innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out one.
CUI wasted no time getting on the board offensively as
Landry Spitler opened the game with a single to set the tone. The Golden Eagles applied early pressure with smart base running and situational play advancing runners into scoring position in the first inning though they were unable to cash in.
After Hawai'i Hilo jumped ahead with a three run home run in the bottom of the first CUI quickly responded in the second.
Nolan Caira sparked the inning with a walk and aggressive base running eventually scoring on an RBI single from
David Baruch III to cut into the deficit.
In the sixth inning the Golden Eagles delivered one of their strongest stretches of the game. With runners on Spitler came through in a big moment driving in two runs with a clutch single to tie the game at 3–3.
After falling behind again in the sixth CUI showed resilience in the seventh inning. Caira reached base and stole second to get into scoring position setting the stage for
Ian Stewart who delivered with an RBI walk to even the score once again at 4–4.
Down to their final outs CUI found a way to extend the game. After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt moved the tying run into position Baruch III reached base allowing the run to score and knot the game at 5–5 forcing extra innings. In the tenth inning CUI once again put a runner in scoring position continuing to apply pressure but was not able to bring Walz around and the game ultimately ended on a walk-off home run by the Vulcans.
Game 2: CUI 7, UHH 1
After a quiet opening inning CUI's offense broke through in the second stringing together hits from
Dylan Knowles and
Nicolas Erickson before
Jordan Bolden delivered a key two-run double to spark a three run frame. The pressure continued in the third as
Isaiah Walz and
Cooper Marinelli helped extend the lead to 4–0.
The offense kept building momentum in the fourth when Erickson launched a solo home run. Even as Hawai'i Hilo responded with a run in the bottom half CUI maintained control answering back in the sixth with RBI contributions from Bolden and a perfectly placed bunt single by Baruch III to stretch the lead to 6–1. The seventh inning was highlighted with Walz swiping bags and Marinelli driving in another run via sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 7–1.
Michael Panichi delivered a strong and steady performance on the mound working 6.0 innings while allowing just one earned run on four hits. Panichi limited damage effectively striking out a season-high five batters and keeping hitters off balance throughout his outing. In relief
Jayden Daya was sharp and efficient, tossing a clean inning without allowing a hit or run while adding a strikeout.
CUI will be back in action on Friday Apr. 17 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. as they take on Azusa Pacific on the road. They will finish the series at Golden Eagles Field Saturday Apr. 18 with a 1 p.m. and around 4:30 p.m. start times where the Golden Eagles will honor their seniors prior to first pitch.
