Golden Eagles Soar Past Cal State LA

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 22 CUI women's volleyball team continued its strong run through the schedule taking down fellow Golden Eagles Cal State LA in four sets with scores 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18.

PacWest Player of the Week Emma Wegleitner once again led the charge recording her second consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs. The redshirt junior also anchored the Green and Gold from the service line firing three aces to lead the team.

Livia Eyre added seven kills while Sofia Ajmal made her presence felt at the net with three kills and two jaw-dropping blocks. Kayden Croy chipped in four kills and helped spark the defense with three block assists and five digs.

At the net Delaney Gregg continued to be nearly unstoppable. Gregg finished 9-for-15 with an impressive .600 hitting percentage while adding two aces. She also came up big defensively with three block assists and a solo block. Sarah Guglielmana and Gabby Johnson combined for eight kills and four block assists giving the Green and Gold another strong presence at the net.

Nevada Knowles ran the CUI offense for most of the match finishing with 34 assists, six kills and nine digs. Keely Harrington provided a spark off the bench with four assists and three digs.

Halen Kiefer and Kendyll Winn split libero duties with Winn leading the duo with eight digs and Kiefer adding four. Celia Dowell and Avery Banaag also stepped in to serve recording three and two digs respectively.

CUI controlled the opening two sets from the start. Croy sparked lengthy service runs that repeatedly pushed Cal State LA out of system allowing Knowles to keep the offense moving and utilize every hitter at the net.

The momentum shifted in the third set as Cal State LA prevented the Green and Gold from finding a rhythm. The opposing Golden Eagles avoided lengthy CUI runs and steadily chipped away on offense to extend the match. CUI responded in the fourth. The Green and Gold refused to let Cal State LA build any sustained momentum maintaining control down the stretch and closing out the four-set victory.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the road as they take on Westmont in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Friday Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
