The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles played one of their best matches of the year and defeated Grand Canyon at home on Thursday night, 3-0.
By the Numbers: Andrew Hammer led the charge with 13 kills and Ryan Anselmo gave a spark with 10 kills, hitting .600. Joseph Pillon chipped in eight kills.Â
The Difference: The Eagles had five aces, two by Taylor Falduti, and had a 72% sideout percentage. They stropped GCU from getting on any long runs.
Critical Plays: Set one was back and forth early with each team making a few errors. An ace from Hunter Howell gave CUI the 16-13 lead, the largest of the set so far. Joseph Pillon took an assist from Taylor Falduti and CUI jumped up 23-19. Andrew Hammer ended the set 25-22. Falduti served an ace and CUI led 4-1 in set two. Falduti and Ryan Anselmo sent one back to increase it to 9-4. GCU came back to tie the set at 13. Bryce Gordon served an ace, and CUI jumped ahead 20-18. CUI took it home from there, 25-22. A kill from Anselmo paced CUI to an early two-point lead in set three. Falduti and Andrew Hammer blocked one to make it 12-8. An Antelope error extended it to 15-9. GCU got three back, but CUI took it 25-22.Â
What it Means:Â The Eagles improve to 10-2 on the year and have won 30-straigth home matches.
