CUI Celebrates Senior Night With 3-1 Win Over Slugs

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles were victorious at home on Senior Night on Tuesday, 3-1 over UC Santa Cruz.

By the Numbers:  Jonathan Predney led with 19 kills, hitting .318, and Andrew Hammer had 15, hitting .371.  Senior Griffin Ender had 12 digs, senior Devin Ross had two, senior Dylan Thompson had six kills and five blocks, and senior Timothy Moses had a dig.

The Difference:  In the sets they won CUI led in sideout percentage, they hit .276 compared to .213 for UCSC, and won in blocks 11.5-9.

Critical Plays:  A block from Hammer and Howell, and kill from Pillon paced CUI to a 10-6 lead in set one.  A Banana Slug blocked closed the gap to 17-16 and then tied at 21.  An error gave the edge back to CUI, and a back row kill from Hammer made it 24-22, but again UCSC tied at 24.  Predney found space to end it 26-24.  A UCSC error broke the tie in set two, 7-6, and Hunter Howell made it 8-6.  Dylan Thompson and Predney sent one back to make it 14-8.  After UCSC closed to one, Chandler Gibb served an ace for the 23-21 edge.  The Slugs then tied at 23, and grabbed set point at 28 all, and a block took it 32-30.  Predney and Taylor Falduti set the block in set three to lead 9-6.  The Slugs closed to 17-14, but CUI kicked it in gear to 25-17.  The Slugs controlled the early part of set four, 14-11.  Two blocks from Falduti and Cristian Rodriguez tied at 14.  The Eagles fought back again to tie at 24, Predney grabbed set point on the kill, and a UCSC error ended it. 

What it Means:  Concordia, recently ranked #37 in the NCAA RPI Poll, improved to 12-6 and finished 10-1 at home in 2016.

Up Next:  Concordia has two road matches remaining, first with Hope International at 7 pm on April 4.
